Summary:

Safely drives school buses and other commercial vehicles to transport students to and from school and school-related activities; drives for charter trips related to athletic competitions; drives shuttle buses; and performs any driving tasks as required or assigned.

Job Description:

Provides transportation services for the University as assigned; and drives all University-owned vehicles including commercial vehicles in a safe and courteous manner.

Adheres to U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) related to hours of services, pre- and post-inspection of commercial vehicles, licensure and safety; and completes University and federally required documents for compliance.

Acknowledges proper procedures for boarding and unloading school students and other passengers, operating wheelchair lifts, securing child safety seat installation and emergency evacuation of students and passengers; and trains students on school bus proper evacuation procedures.

Understands the department's motor vehicle accident procedures and institutes the same should an accident occur; and practices proper decorum at the scene of an accident.

Maintains the exterior cleanliness of assigned school bus; assures interior of bus is cleaned at the conclusion of a field or charter trip; and refuels vehicles according to established procedures.

Exhibits defensive driving habits and observes speed limits.

Attends all safety training programs presented for Drivers.

Communicates and fosters a positive relationship with students, parents, teachers, and staff.

Wears the uniform and garments issued by the Transportation Department at all times while on duty.

Assists Bus Monitor with developing written reports and in developing school runs and directions.

Performs bus inspection at the conclusion of school run, school related activity or shuttle to make certain no students or passengers remain on the bus and to collect personal items left on the bus.

Drives for charter trips related to athletic competitions.

Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisor.

Demonstrates a genuine commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.

Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.

Performs related and other duties as assigned.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications: High school diploma or GED.

A minimum of one year of professional experience with driving large commercial buses, trucks, and school buses.

Class "B" or "C" CDL license.

Preferred Qualifications: Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Strong ability to follow sign language and written instructions.

Strong ability to move, lift, and secure students and equipment upon entering and exiting the school bus and during emergency situations.

Demonstrated driving record with no moving violations or points.

Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents and groups.

Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.

Additional Job Details: The successful candidates must possess air brakes (except for the Small School Buses) and endorsements of (P) passengers and/or (S) school bus.

The successful candidate must maintain a Medical Certification Card as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The successful candidate must possess the Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid or attain it within thirty days of hire.

The successful candidate is required to undergo a suitability background investigation.

The successful candidate is required to be tested for use of illicit drugs and alcohol prior to employment and randomly while employed by University policy and in compliance with federal laws.

The successful candidate must have valid authorization to work in the United States.

If the incumbent has no knowledge of American Sign Language, the incumbent is required to achieve an ASLPI score of 1.5 within two years of employment. If the incumbent is hired with some knowledge of American Sign Language, the incumbent is required to achieve an ASLPI score of 2 within two years of employment. The supervisor must ensure that the incumbent receives the necessary support to meet this goal.

Other Important Information: The successful candidate will undergo a background check that must be cleared prior to working at Gallaudet University.
