Job Summary

The objective of the STEAM Coordinator is to provide coordination support for the Opening the Box of Traditional Ecological Knowledge: STEAM Pathways for High School Students project and other grants serving high schools and research institutions within the STEAM Program via the Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) Education Department. Independent judgement is required to plan, prioritize, and organize diversified workloads. This position will be responsible for supporting the AISES (American Indian Science and Engineering Society) chapters, SHI’s Virtual Indigenous, and leadership for the high school community of practice.

Duties/Responsibilities

Lead and coordinate teacher professional development for diverse educators and instructional coaches.

Co-develop online and hybrid courses and educational experiences.

Coordinate registration, support, and travel for STEAM high school and higher education courses, camps, field experiences, and conferences.

Develop contracts and scopes of work, and manage payments.

Maintain databases, spreadsheets, and project tracking instruments.

Collaborate with evaluator to ensure compliance and completion of related deliverables.

Demonstrates effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Demonstrates ability to manage multiple projects and activities with attention to detail

Strong organizational and planning skills in project logistics and events

Technical capacity and expertise in using spreadsheets and databases

Knowledge of Southeast Alaska Native culture and languages

Supervisory Responsibility

This position will have no direct reports.

This position’s duties are performed at the Walter Soboleff Building off site for programming activities. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to verbally communicate. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and climbling. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.

About this Role

This is a full-time temporary non-benefited position. SHI full-time employees are expected to work during SHI’s regular business hours of 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday. Additionally, employees may work up to or over 45 hours per week or additional time as needed to meet workload demands or special events such as Celebration.

All staff are expected to work as a team for our bi-annual Celebration. This four-day event is a required activity in which all staff participate. Tasks are assigned to staff and staff are expected to attend the event for full days, potentially as long as 12 hours each day.

Regular travel to offsite programming locations is required.

Required Education and Experience

2 years of professional work in project management and program coordination.

Experience working with a diverse group of stakeholders including Alaska Native students and families.
