The Program Director for Clinical Careers works under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Clinical Careers. They provide career development services, programs and resources in the areas of self assessment, career exploration, job search strategies and professional skills for health professional students pursuing clinical careers.

The incumbent's general responsibilities are to lead the overall efforts for two health professional schools and one clinically focused master's program, in addition to serving all health professional students. This includes assessing needs, determining long and short term goals and strategies, executing plans to achieve those goals and developing meaningful metrics to evaluate the success of those efforts. Specific goals include: Providing advance guidance for OCPD and the campus in the area of career development and career counseling in clinical career paths

Developing career awareness among UCSF students and the wide range of professional opportunities available to individuals with their training skills and interests

Designing virtual, in-person and asynchronous programs, resources and services to develop career and professional skills necessary for success along clinical career paths

Building relationships and collaborations with key stakeholders across the university including professional schools' senior administrators, faculty , student service units, employers and alumni

In addition to offering 1-1 virtual and in-person career counseling and programming, the Program Director oversees the Career Services Specialist 3 and co-supervises and trains work study graduate level trainees and Masters of Counseling/Organizational Behavior interns completing practicums with OCPD in collaboration with the Career Services Specialist 3. A Masters in Counseling degree is required to supervise practicum students. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Department Description

The goal of the Office of Career and Professional Development (OCPD) is to help UCSF biomedical trainees build the professional skills necessary for career success. This growing and dynamic office provides programs, services, individual assistance, and web and print resources, all designed to enhance the academic, professional, and career development of our students and post-graduate trainees.

Required Qualifications

Advanced degree in Student Affairs, Counseling, LCSW, or related area and / or equivalent experience / training

5 years of related/relevant experience

Advanced knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling processes, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.

Advanced knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice; virtual and in-person workshop and program design

Strong ability to work with people from diverse cultures both in-person and virtually

Expertise in independently developing and delivering interactive, skills-based career and professional development virtual and in person programming to students

Must be able to collaborate well and partner with key stakeholders to identify issues and projects, and design tailored virtual and in-person solutions

Ability to work evenings virtually counseling students, delivering virtual or in-person programs and training trainees, Monday-Thursday, (up to 7 or 8pm) as needed

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced knowledge of UC programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, employment trends

Strong ability to design and modify computer applications and cloud based platforms to meet program needs, problem identification, presentation skills, verbal communication, written communication, and organization skills

Knowledge of clinical professions: Cultural nuances, skills needed for success, day-to-day activities and challenges (which can be used to develop case studies), job search processes and job market data

Demonstrated aptitude and expertise in use of technology and ability to independently learn new technologies proactively, independently and quickly: This position requires demonstrated knowledge with a broad range of Mac-based systems, assessment and evaluation tools, learning design apps, image and video editing tools, networking platforms, video interviewing and virtual job search tools on a regular basis

Knowledge of supervising and coaching of professional staff and/or student/postdoc trainees: Understands how to set expectations, delegate effectively, give corrective and kudos feedback regularly, and manage conflicts skillfully

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated experience conceptualizing, developing and creating engaging interactive marketing and outreach materials, programs and surveys, designing virtual marketing campaigns and writing event descriptions and other publicity materials, and training trainees on marketing best practices

Knowledge of pedagogy for adult and professional learners

Strong aptitude and success with change management including demonstrated understanding of the challenges and complexities involved in proactively guiding their trainees and supervisee through change, flexibility and resilience working in dynamic environments, evidence of proactive communication, decision-making and accountability, creativity, critical thinking, advanced ability to organize workload while successfully continuously managing change and innovation as well as providing training and resources as needed

Demonstrated experience working independently on complex ongoing multi-year projects
