Medical Laboratory Technician PRN

General Summary of Position Performs a variety of laboratory testing from waived to high complexity per Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act(CLIA). Will work in one or more laboratory sections. Evaluates and reports results for use in patient diagnosisand treatment.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to departmentpolicies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
Performs a wide variety of routine and special procedures following prescribed protocol and using manual orautomated methods; calculates and reports results as established; consults with pathologist regarding difficultanalysis or abnormal findings.
Processes specimens ensuring accuracy of identification; confidentiality of information, and appropriatepreparation, storage, and transportation; may perform specimen procurement as required.
Operates and maintains laboratory equipment in areas of assignment; troubleshoots problems; and validatesand documents information as required per standard protocol.
Participates in surveys, conducts established quality control of procedures, evaluates results, implementscorrective action when indicated, and ensures accuracy of test results.
Prepares, evaluates, and labels reagents, media, etc. per procedure.
Maintains inventory supply; stocks and maintains neat, orderly work area.
Trains new associates and students. Instructs others in new procedures; evaluates and documentsperformance.
Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams; participates in meetings and oncommittees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
Can manage the department in the absence of the supervisor.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education Associate's degree in accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program requiredor
60 semester hours including 24 hours of medical lab technology requiredor
60 semester hours including 24 hours of science that includes 6 hours of chemistry, 6 hours of biology and 12 hours of chemistry, biology requiredor
medical lab technician in any combination and laboratory training that includes either completion of a clinical lab training program requiredor
3 months training in each specialty in which high complexity testingpreferred
Experience 1-2 years Up to 1 year in a clinical licensed laboratory required
Licenses and Certifications Health Educ & Welfare (lab) - HEWASCP/AMT/HEW certificationpreferred
American Medical Technologists - AMTpreferred
MLT-Medical Lab Technician (ASCP)preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland HospitalCenter.
Ability to read, write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essentialduties of the position.
Ability to demonstrate ethical behavior that supports the hospital's mission, values and commitment tocompliance with all federal, state and regulatory laws. Inspires trust and exhibits honesty and integritywithin the scope of daily activities.

Knowledge, skill and ability to utilize the following equipment for: Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis,Blood Bank, Microbiology, Histology, Automated Stainers; Centrifuges, fax, copier, phone, computer andscanner.
Knowledge, skill and ability to complete all laboratory competencies within the Medical LaboratoryTechnician scope of practice.
