Description
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire student assistants (SA) to ensure the Aging and Disability Services Divisions (ADSD) web design and support services are met by assisting in the implementation and support of information technology policies, standards and services. The SA will also assist information technology (IT) employees to provide high quality customer service as well as providing assistance with a variety of division projects, using software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, Sitecore, and Drupal.

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.
Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department.
UEI does not allow students to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI Student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant positing should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week's notice.

Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.

Work Schedule
Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. Final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Minimum Qualifications
Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
Must have knowledge of: Electronic computer systems, electronic data processing equipment, and its capabilities
The basic concepts of hardware, software, telecommunications, and networking for platforms supported by Caltrans headquarters.
Principles and techniques of studying work processes for new or revised electronic computer applications, technical report writing, and statistical methods.
Must have the ability to: Analyze data and situations, reason logically and creatively, identify problems, draw valid conclusions, and develop effective solutions.
Thoroughly and accurately follow written and oral instructions.
Speak and write effectively.
Prepare effective reports.
Satisfactorily carry out increasingly difficult assignments.
Do neat and accurate work.

Preferred Qualifications Good written and verbal communication skills
Previous experience or knowledge with web design.
Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking.
Duties and Responsibilities Modifications to web pages as requested by the customers through ServiceNow ticket system. Creating, updating, and maintaining web pages within the Sitecore XP Content Management System and within the Drupal Content Management System.
Assist with systems maintenance and operations.
Performing administrative activities, system account management, monitoring system performance, performing health checks, monitoring systems for proper operations.
Assisting with remediating security vulnerabilities and threats.
Troubleshooting and resolving system anomalies.
Following established technology practices, processes and procedures for incident management, monthly scheduled maintenance.
Updating system maintenance manuals, notifying customers and stakeholders of issues affecting website performance, anomalies, and maintenance service windows.
Assist with systems analysis. Assist in the efficient delivery, quality, and completeness of all technical deliverables on new development projects or on major enhancements to existing systems.
As necessary, actively participates in conferences, meetings, hearings, or presentations involving problems or issues of considerable consequences or importance.
Assist in remediation of department's web pages and documents to ensure the web pages are meeting the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance standards. Assist with systems design/development.
Analyzing, designing, developing, implementing, maintaining, and documenting coding solutions to meet departmental business requirements.
Participating in system software engineering design activities associated with design/build techniques.
Performing coding using web-based application development tools to design interfaces, web services.
Writing back-end database scripts to perform data manipulation, building ad hoc reporting tools, developing and implementing migration, conversion and interface strategies for the technology refresh projects.
Following departmental policies and procedures.
Working closely with business analyst, application architecture unit, other programmers, database administrators, system administrators, quality control unit, release manager and program areas to ensure that the technical deliverable is of quality and meets the specified customer requirements timely.
Assist with system testing. Organizing, planning, and developing test use cases and system test specifications.
Collaborating with stakeholders on systems test activities including planning, testing, reporting and correcting problems found during the test phase of the system development life cycle.
Maintaining and following established technology practices, processes and procedures for unit testing, system testing, performance testing, etc.
Assist with other related duties as necessary.
In addition to the above, the student assistant will play a crucial role in supporting web development and ensuring the accessibility of digital content and application using information technology software engineering methods. The SA will assist in going through phases of the system development life cycle to ensure efficient and effective delivery of IT products, services, and/or systems: Web Development Support: Assists in creating and maintaining websites and web applications using CSS, HTML, and JavaScript for functional and aesthetically pleasing designs.
Enhancing User Experience with Accessibility: Develops and implements ADA-compliant web solutions by applying Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to make websites accessible to people with disabilities.
Collaboration on Accessible Web Projects: Works with IT staff to integrate web technologies and accessibility principles into system-software solutions, enhancing frontend and accessibility features.
Accessibility Testing and Best Practices: Evaluates web content for accessibility compliance using manual and automated tools, advocating for best practices in accessibility to meet or exceed ADA standards.
Physical Requirements
