Boston Medical Center has implemented a New Graduate PeriOperative 101 program that incorporates the ‘Nurse of the Future’ Core Competencies. New graduate nurses will be hired into the organization in small cohorts. The New Graduate Cohort will attend nursing orientation, matriculate though the operating room residency curriculum and remain together until they sit for a final exam for certification through the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses (AORN).
This program will provide the new nurse specialized hybrid learning opportunities that include online modules, classroom didactic, hands-on skills and simulation lab sessions with clinical preceptorship in the operating room.
Position: New Graduate RN Residency
Department: Operating Room
Schedule: 40 Hours (4 – 10 hour shifts, D/E/N Rotation) for the orientation period.

If selected, participate in a panel interview.
If selected, must be licensed as an RN and have active BLS before the first day, and work full time for six months in varying shifts.
U pon completion of orientation nurses will be seated into the Menino or Moakley operating room and be offered shift rotations based on current unit staffing needs which may include on-call, night shifts, and holiday commitments.
SCHEDULING SUMMARY
This schedule provides maximum exposure to the new clinical environment, colleagues, and patient populations.
After the conclusion of the residency program, shifts - including weekend rotation, unit, and hourly status, will be assigned.
All cohort participants are paid as employees and will receive benefits according to Boston Medical Center’s established policies and procedures.
Each nurse is responsible in collaboration with their preceptor and clinical nurse educator to devise weekly goals.
Basic computer proficiency is inclusive of the ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information.
Effective interpersonal skills to facilitate communication with various healthcare team members, patients, and families.
Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work.
Multilingual skills (beyond that of English) in languages appropriate to the patient populations served by the Medical Center preferred.
Relevant clinical experience and/or specialty, certification is preferred for certain practice areas.
Analytical ability to solve clinical nursing issues and conduct quality improvement projects.
REPORTING STRUCTURE
Following the American Nurses Association’s “Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice,” the registered nurse, under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager, is primarily responsible for professional performance and direct patient care.
ROLE DESCRIPTION
The role is designated for nurses who have graduated from nursing school within the twelve (12) months before their date of hire and encompasses nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and coordination of care for patients and their families across the health care continuum. The registered nurse is accountable for clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal patient care outcomes using the model of care designed by the nursing department and following established BMC policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and standards of practice.
REQUIRED EDUCATION
Graduation from an accredited BSN program within the twelve (12) months before the date of hire required.
Graduation for an accredited ASN program within the twelve (12) months before the date of hire required.
If graduating from an ASN program, Registered Nurses are required to enroll in a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) program by the end of the first year of employment and receive their BSN by the end of the semester in which their four (4) year anniversary of employment at BMC occurs.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Requires current basic life support (BLS) certification. Additional certifications may be required for certain practice areas.
