Springfield, MA, United States

The MDBO will serve as the primary business partner to the ED on the organization’s financial, administrative, and operations processes with an eye towards continuously developing and improving systems. Charged with keeping broad non-academic areas of work functioning smoothly, the MDBO must be a seasoned organizational leader with excellent business sense. They must be skilled at quickly evaluating a broad range of data, variables and perspectives prior to making sound organizational leadership decisions.

This is an opportunity for an experienced organizational leader to strengthen the capacity and impact of a well-respected, high-impact organization.

Oversee and organize the work of the operations, finance, and HR teams by establishing priorities and objectives, assigning accountabilities, and monitoring results.

Manage 3-5 manager- and director-level members of the operations, finance, and HR teams. Serve as the school’s primary point of contact with multiple service providers (e.g., auditors, legal counsel, and outsourced finance and HR consultants).

Serve as an internal “liaison” between critical functions, ensuring alignment and effectiveness in operations, finance, and HR and keeping the ED and senior leaders informed of critical issues.

Through coaching, management, and performance evaluation of direct reports, promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.

Represent the organization in board meetings and externally on behalf of the ED, particularly in areas of authorizer, service provider, and vendor relations.

Business and Operations

Lead business administration for the school, including payroll, accounts payable, purchasing, procurement, and contract and vendor management.

With the Executive Director, lead the development of the school’s ~$11M annual budget and independently manage this budget throughout the year.

Work with an outsourced finance provider to prepare and finalize monthly, annual, and ad hoc financial reporting materials for the Board of Trustees and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Support and advise managers across the organization on HR, staffing, and performance management issues.

Oversee human resources functions, including providing guidance to managers, leading compensation and benefits programs, and ensuring compliance with employment laws and regulations.

Lead the development and implementation of HR policies in collaboration with the ED, senior leaders, and HR and legal counsel.

Consult with school counsel and insurance providers to ensure legal compliance and identify and mitigate risks.

Compliance, data analysis and project management

Lead ad hoc data projects and lead special projects that support operations, finance, and HR, as well as other functional areas (e.g., Talent, Academics, DEI).

Manage cross-departmental projects through all stages of work, from design to data collection to analysis to presentation.

Liaise with senior leaders, staff members and service providers and translate complex issues and data into actionable insights, plans and reports.

Ensure compliance and reporting with state, local, and federal government laws and regulations (e.g., inspections, Annual Reports, Program Reviews).

Develop reports, memos, and slide decks for key partners, such as the Board of Trustees, lenders, and donors, showing programmatic evaluation and/or impact.
