Employees appointed to temporary positions may also gain membership in the civil service upon satisfactory completion of an initial probation period of at least six months. Once you become a member of the civil service, you become eligible to apply for promotion and transfer opportunities to permanent as well as other temporary positions. You may also enjoy other rights and benefits afforded to an employee in a permanent position with the exception of return rights and placement rights associated with a reduction-in-force.

Positions in this series perform and/or supervise the performance of work in developing and/or conducting informational and educational programs and activities for preserving and enhancing aquatic resources in accordance with U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service guidelines and requirements. Aquatic resources include native and other resident marine and seaweed; and other sea life.

This class reflects the independent worker level in this series. Work assignments encompass problems of average difficulty and complexity requiring the application of fundamental principles, techniques, standards and guides of the aquatic resources educational and informational specialty. The work involves conducting aquatic resources informational and educational activities and includes preparing and presenting information to various sport fishing and community groups, and individuals, of all ages about: 1) aquatic life forms in Hawaii, how to identify them, and their biological requirements and habitat characteristics; 2) Hawaii's fishing rules and regulations; 3) conservation ethics and responsible use of aquatic resources and habitats; 4) effective recreational fishing methods; and 5) fishing safety practices. Positions in this class also assist Aquatic Biologists in the conduct of aquatic resource surveys, and serve as liaison between the State's aquatic resources programs and the public; and perform other related duties as assigned. To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

Basic Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

Education/Training Experience: One year of progressively responsible professional work experience in program of training or education as an instructor, or other comparable professional position. Such experience must have involved and demonstrated knowledge of basic education or training methods and techniques, and the ability to identify education/training needs and provide instruction to students or groups, and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, including speaking before groups.

Specialized Experience: Six months of work experience which demonstrated knowledge of aquatic resource management and conservation principles and practices. Such experience may have been acquired while serving in a position on a paid or volunteer basis and may have been gained concurrently or separately in meeting the Education/Training Experience requirement.

Special Requirements: Applicants must demonstrate knowledge of important recreational and commercial fish species of the State of Hawaii and the Pacific area, fishing methods and types of fishing gear, and Hawaii State fishing rules and regulations.

License: Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
