Develop, manage and coordinate projects in support of the safe and profitable production of quality fiber glass products through efficient use of internal and external resources.

The incumbent is responsible for the supervision of project scope, cost estimation, engineering design, procurement, construction, installation, and start-up of simultaneous large scale projects involving fiber glass manufacturing production operations. The incumbent must maintain professional relationships with high level technical representatives of major suppliers of engineering and construction services.

The technical complexity of fiber glass manufacturing demands a strong background in engineering applications that are unique to the business in the following areas: heat transfer, viscous fluid flow, hydraulics, thermodynamics, fiber and filament high speed winding/chopping, glass batch melting, process air conditioning, compressed air systems, power distribution systems, fuel oil distribution systems and primary fiber glass production processes and products. The staff engineer must be technically conversant in these technologies and be able to supervise senior engineering personnel responsible for assignments in these areas on large scale projects.

Projects may require construction of new on-site facilities, plant expansions, modification of existing equipment and the design of new equipment for the fiber glass manufacturing process. The incumbent may be involved with contract negotiations with outside contractors or suppliers. The incumbent works closely with production, research, development, and process improvement engineers. The incumbent makes periodic progress reports and presentations to the vice president operations, chief engineer, manufacturing manager, manager manufacturing engineering and various production department heads.

Innovations of new processes and equipment designs are vital to improve productivity and to remain competitive. While the incumbent must be concerned with keeping pace with the latest technological advances and recommending how they may apply to the fiber glass process, the incumbent must also attempt to maximize utilization of current capital assets which will produce material meeting quality and cost objectives.
