We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to become a part of our team! This person will prepare detailed designs of custom automation equipment including hard automation and robotic cells, they will lead projects and act as a group lead, they will help identify areas of improvement to increase efficiency, and they will create and upkeep standard processes for the engineering group. This person will need to show competency in all aspects of the machine design process including:
Conceptual design
Equipment specification development
Detailed design
Oversight of the assembly and fabrication
Testing and installation
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will need to be a proficient communicator and have the ability to work in and over a team. The depth of the role played in projects will vary, however, project management will be required. They will work with OEM's, suppliers, detailers, fabricators, assemblers, and machine shops, and will need to work closely with Controls Engineers to automate the designs.
This role will require contact and interaction with customers and senior leadership and will also provide a high level of creativity, efficiency, and quality in design of products. The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer must exemplify and model the Delta Core Values and will demonstrate a high level of integrity and a strong mechanical aptitude. They will develop leadership/mentoring skills, and must be collaborative/team oriented.
Responsibilities:
Collaborate with management teams to effectively communicate project expectations to team members and stakeholders in a timely and clear fashion.
Resolve operational problems related to projects and minimize delays or unexpected cost increases.
Demonstrate commitment for project success whether project leader or as part of a project team.
Develop ability to support sales team in pre-sales technical concept and budgeting activities.
Develop skills to analyze project requirements and perform technical calculations supporting designs including FEA if required.
Ability to manage internal design reviews and participate in design reviews with customer.
Create and finalize designs to meet project requirements.
Lead creation of accurate Bill of Materials (BOM’s).
Define equipment and parts from external suppliers.
Conduct cost estimation and present to team for review.
Project Management: oversee project workflow and support internal and external resources to ensure timely delivery of projects, expected quality, and allotted budget.
Set and oversee the management of project expectations, milestones, and deliverables with team members and other stakeholders with associated communications documents.
Mechanical design of customized solutions including motor sizing, pneumatic/electro-pneumatic/and electrical routing.
Participates in the development of department best practices and standard operating procedures to include integration and hand-off of designs to the Purchasing and Operations departments.
Support manufacture, build and validation of systems.
Create customer documentation.
Maintain accurate records and files according to quality standard.
Commissioning of customized products and systems onsite and at customer facilities.
Participates and leads project post mortems and creates a recommendations report in order to identify successful and unsuccessful project elements as a part of project closure.
Provide high quality pre-sales, design-in and post-sales technical support to customer.
Provides technical expertise on strategic initiatives.
Monitors vendor products and new technologies.
Continuously collaborates with internal and external teams to achieve shared objectives.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Requirements:
10+ years professional experience in a technical field
5+ years of professional experience designing and developing industrial automation products and systems.
BS in mechanical engineering required, or acceptable demonstrated experience
Experience with engineering principles and procedures that apply to machine design, part handling, robotic end-of-arm-tool design, semi-automated work cell layout, robotic work cell layout, process flow, operator ergonomics and machine aesthetics.
Proficient in the use of SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD to generate 3-D solid model designs from concept to fabrication.
Experience in conducting Motion and Time Studies for the development of future engineered labor standards.
Experience with layout & design in order to optimize flow, alleviate bottlenecks, enhance workstation ergonomics, reduce labor costs, improve service times, enhance product quality/accuracy, etc.
Familiarity with industry policies and procedures to ensure safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance.
Experience with motion control technologies and mechanical drive train design including the application of stepper motors, servo motors, pneumatics and hydraulics.
Position requires up to 25% - 50% travel. Some will be international travel.
Qualifications:

Experience with creation and maintenance of mechanical design standards and drawing libraries.
