*Banking services provided by MVB Bank, Inc., Member FDIC Credit Karma is looking for an experienced employment counsel who is passionate about all things employment. As Employment Counsel, you will proactively assess legal risks and advise on employment issues. You will work closely with other members of the Legal and People teams and leaders across the organization to effectively manage risk and help the company scale.
What You’ll Do:
Provide advice/counsel on a variety of employment topics such as performance management, leaves of absence, accommodations, wage and hour, DEI, internal investigations, reorganizations, redundancy and role eliminations
Assist in building out and maintaining a confidential, one-stop shop HR-Legal Hub with access to various resources
Develop and conduct training for employees, managers, and the People team
Advise on employment matters, both domestically and internationally, including state and federal compliance (e.g., ADA, ADEA, Title VII, FMLA, FLSA, WARN Act and state/municipal equivalents), disciplinary actions, wage & hour issues, investigations and disability accommodation
Investigate and respond to claims, demand letters, administrative complaints, audits, and other employment-related inquiries
Actively monitor new laws, regulations and decisions affecting the substantive areas of employment law and litigation and provide strategic advice to relevant stakeholders
Respond to day-to-day policy issues raised within the organization and, according to circumstances, provide guidance and recommendations for resolution
Draft and negotiate offer letters and employment-related agreements, including severance, separation, restrictive covenant, retention and other agreements
Draft employee-facing policies, handbooks and other resources, enhance our processes and forms
Support resolution of federal, state and local agency claims and charges
Provide employment law support for mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures
Manage employment arbitrations and litigation, including developing litigation strategy and selecting and managing outside counsel
Manage outside counsel on employment matters
Minimum Base Requirements:
Juris Doctorate (JD) degree from an accredited law school
Valid state bar membership and the ability to practice in-house in North Carolina or California
7+ years of experience as counsel focused on labor and employment matters, advising on Title VII, FMLA, ADA, FLSA, and California state equivalents
Demonstrated ability to handle both complex legal analysis and nuts and bolts program design and project management
Ability to evaluate risk in light of business and practical considerations and make clear and concise recommendations
Ability to balance and prioritize multiple time-sensitive tasks effectively and independently
Ability to work effectively and collaboratively within the Legal and People teams.
Strong written and oral communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior in-house experience preferred
Experience as an employment litigator, representing companies in disputes
Proficiency with California employment laws and regulations
Experience with technology or fast-paced startups, including the ability to think creatively, exercise sound judgment, and make clear recommendations to support business partners and cross-functional stakeholders
