CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under the general direction and supervision of the Principal Investigators, the Research Associate I will perform and support daily research activities in the Tavares (https://tavareslab.bio.udel.edu/) and Wei (https://www.bio.udel.edu/people/swei) Labs. The principal emphasis is to maintain the Xenopus colonies and facilities, perform work with mice, and provide basic technical assistance to the PIs as well as postdocs and students in their labs to conduct experiments in support of ongoing research.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists Principal Investigators in the analyses and interpretation of the experiment results. Independently collects, compiles, analyzes, and interprets data; prepares statistical and narrative reports and/or graphs.

Delivers individual instruction and training covering a range of technical areas in a specified field.

Independently conducts experimental and organizational procedures and activities to maintain the Xenopus tropicalis and Xenopus laevis colonies and facilities.

Partners with the Principal Investigators (PI) to conduct mouse breeding and genotyping. Conducts microinjection of frog eggs and genotyping of mouse embryos while implementing animal and lab safety protocols. Receives and carries out instructions on specific assignment objectives, complex features, and possible solutions.

Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes workplace safety.

Maintains sophisticated laboratory tests/apparatus; designs, performs, and oversees experiments and data collection to ensure data integrity and protocol compliance.

Observe, train and assist graduate and undergraduate students regarding good safety practices with particular attention to monitoring students in the use of hazardous materials.

Utilizes information taken from primary journal articles to carry out relevant experiments and or interpretation of results.

Presents experimental results to the faculty supervisor or to the lab group for discussion and future planning.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned. Duties may involve ordering laboratory supplies, maintenance of animal colonies, and preparation of regulatory documents.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or a related field with one year of lab experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Previous experience in lab management and/or working with mice or aquatic animals is preferred.

Knowledge of standard biochemical research methodology, principles and procedures.

Knowledge of the use and maintenance of laboratory facilities and/or equipment.

Knowledge of scientific approach and methodologies.

Requires skill in use of personal computers and related software applications including Microsoft Office.

Ability to understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures; ability to design, organize, and coordinate scientific and/or engineering research projects; as well as ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol.

Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students.

ENVIRONMENTAL/OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

With or without assistance, must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.

Requires dexterity in handling delicate and hazardous materials as well as sensitive laboratory equipment.

The ability to accurately discern colors and measure laboratory reagents.

Must be able to work various and sometimes long hours due to the timing on experiments, including possibly holidays, weekends and evenings.
