Position Description: The Materials Characterization Technician (Chemistry) is hands-on lab tech role responsible for supporting the NPI Analytical Labs by performing analyses and ensuring the accuracy of results on a variety of chemical and magnetic property tests. This position complies with all policies and procedures to perform consistent test practices that conform with customer expectations and ensures that all analytical results are approved and reported in a timely manner.
Essential Duties: Become proficient with analytical techniques and instrumentation.
Primary focus is ICP-OES, but additional testing includes LECO, XRF, XRD.
Review analytical results, research any discrepancies, and report any anomalous results to the Lab Manager and Magnet Technology team.
Perform routine and non-routine analysis, including chemical, and magnetic, and of a wide variety of product, process, project, research, and environmental samples from all areas of the operation.
Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation.
Assist in tracking and maintaining the chemical reagent inventory.
Clean and maintain workstation(s) after use and help to ensure laboratory instrumentation/equipment is in safe working order.
Perform lab housekeeping and routine inspections.
Prioritize analytical work with Magnet Technology team.
Actively participate in the safety management programs and adhere to all appropriate laboratory safety and operations procedures. Also comply with all health, environmental, and safety regulations, company policies, processes, and procedures.
Maintain safe work practices.
Completes any other tasks as needed or directed by management.
Basic Qualifications: Aptitude and experience with chemical testing analytical techniques and instrumentation.
Associate degree in chemistry, science, or electronics related area required.
Strong desire to work in a hands-on capacity to maintain lab equipment.
Familiarity with computers and data entry and analysis
Desired Qualities: Knowledge of laboratory instruments used for materials chemical characterization.
Knowledge of rare earth element chemical test methods - DSC/TGA, Dilatometry, pulse-field magnetometry, and closed-loop magnetometry.
