Requirements The technician is primarily responsible for maintaining excellence in patient care and assisting the veterinarian. Technicians also play a vital role in client communication. Technicians work in all areas of the hospital to provide the best possible care for patients. This position holds an essential role in communication and organization between all team members.
Knowledge of andability to obtain vitals for Small Animals, Avian, and Exotics
Patient Record Keeping (TreatmentSheet and Computer Record)
Restraint of patients UsingLow-Stress Techniques
Basic Knowledge of Common Diseases
Knowledge of Commonly UsedMedications (Routes of Administration, +/- Filter, Dilution)
Proficient in Basic Medical Math(lbs to kgs, dose to ml administered, etc)
Able to calculate intravenousfluid rates
Proficient in administration ofSQ, IM, and IV medications
Ability to read doctors’ ordersand perform treatments accordingly
Able to Perform Phlebotomy(Peripheral and Jugular)
Able to Place Peripheral IVCatheters
Ability to operate patientinfusion pumps
Able to Assist in CPCR Followingthe RECOVER Guidelines
Knowledge of and adherence toAseptic Technique
Assist doctors in appointments
Client Communication
Assist with radiographs usingappropriate PPE
Medicate patients as prescribedvia oral or topical routes
Proficient in operating allLaboratory Equipment
Perform basic animal husbandry
Assist in keeping the hospitalclean and stocked
Report inventory needs toappropriate team member
Demonstrate knowledge ofsanitation and disinfection techniques
ie. patient kennels and bedding, examrooms, hospital facilities, and surgical suites
Able to collect voided urinesamples from patients.
Ability to disconnect/stop andreconnect/start IV pumps
Effectively communicate with allmembers of the staff
Always practice in a manner thatupholds NorthStar VETS Core Values
Complete other projects/duties asassigned by management
Attend hospital/departmentmeetings as required
Participate in the on-call andholiday schedule as required
Fast paced, multi-task, must beable to lift up to 45 lbs solo and 150 lbs with some assistance, standing forprolonged periods of time, tolerate sickness/death, exposure to zoonotic diseases and occupational radiation.
