Position description

Lead Infectious Disease Scientist (QBI/UCSF; Krogan lab)

About QBI

The Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI; https://qbi.ucsf.edu/) at the University of California, San Francisco, is about breaking down the walls in academia and creating teams between scientists working in diverse disciplines to tackle problems that can only be solved by many groups working together. QBI will lead by example with teams of scientists solving each individual problem - together. QBI scientists are experts in developing experimental and computational tools that can be applied to many biological or biomedical problems. These tools allow for effective connection between discovery research and the clinic, enabling the development of new breakthrough therapies for disease.

As a highly dynamic and collaborative institute, QBI applies disease agnostic technology such as proteomics and functional genomics, as well as biochemistry, computational biology, and bioinformatics to unravel the molecular networks underpinning infectious diseases, as well as cancer and neurological disorders. Our projects leverage a wide array of experimental approaches with a collaborative infrastructure necessary for long-term investigation. QBI scientists interface with other highly productive and exceptionally collaborative researchers to further our understanding of the molecular mechanisms driving pathogenic diseases and discovering new avenues for therapeutics.

The Role

We are looking for a highly motivated and innovative Lead Infectious Disease Scientist and Program Manager to join our team. In this role, you will facilitate the coordination of large collaborative scientific initiatives. Working with QBI Director Nevan Krogan, project PIs, and the QBI scientific leadership, you will design, oversee, and coordinate infectious disease projects that are the collaborative effort of scientists across academic institutions, global collaborators, and industry partners.

Specifically, this position will:

Lead a team of researchers and trainees in unravelling mechanisms of infectious diseases.

Provide scientific oversight including review and advice on study design, modeling, data analysis and validation, team management, and suggesting new approaches.

Launch new projects and provide strategic planning to our infectious diseases grant portfolio.

Track progress toward project goals, facilitate coordination among participating partners, evaluate project data and results, and report project status to leadership.

Identify new funding opportunities, coordinate submission of new project proposals and preparation of manuscripts.

Interface with stakeholders in academia and industry as well as funders.

This position requires a scientist qualified for independent research at the level of principal investigator and is for the job classification of Professional Researcher. It is not a faculty research position.

The QBI is a highly dynamic and collaborative institute, applying disease agnostic technology such as proteomics and functional genomics, as well as biochemistry, computational biology, and bioinformatics. Our current infectious disease projects apply systems biology approaches to unravel the molecular networks underpinning host-pathogen interactions of SARS-CoV-2, respiratory viruses, HIV, TB, and other pathogens. You will collaborate and interface with a highly productive and exceptionally collaborative group of scientists to further our understanding of the molecular mechanisms driving pathogenic diseases and discovering new avenues for therapeutics.

The ideal candidate should be independent, a creative problem solver, and original thinker. Excellent project management skills and a strong research record are essential, including evidence of publishing in high impact peer-reviewed journals and experience in writing and submitting proposals for federally sponsored research. Applicants will have strong written, verbal, and presentation skills and an ability to communicate and work in an interdisciplinary team environment. Candidate's CV must list all Basic Qualifications (or if pending degree in field) upon submission.

Required Qualifications

PhD and post-graduate in infectious diseases or related field at the time of hire

Demonstrated high productivity and successful publishing record

Demonstrated experience as a research project lead

Experience managing collaborative projects among multiple laboratories

Experience writing research proposals and peer-reviewed manuscripts for publication

Experience designing and executing viral assays, drug screening, and molecular biology and cell-based assays.

Preferred Qualifications

Principal investigator for a grant

History of potential to develop a sustained source of research funding

Existing extramurally funded research program

Understanding of large-scale proteomics data and placing it in a biological context

Experience in handling large scale data

Experience managing direct research budgets

Experience teaching, mentoring, and advising students and trainees

Please apply online at https://aprecruit.ucsf.edu/JPF05044, with a CV, cover letter, and three references.
