Brief Description of Duties

The faculty member will teach courses at the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law. The faculty member is expected to participate in University/School of Law programs and activities. The position requires a commitment to scholarship, as well as participation in outreach activities with stakeholders. We are looking broadly for candidates, but particularly welcome applicants with interest in teaching Property, Torts, Civil Procedure, or Contracts and Business-related courses.

We are also seeking Directors for our Criminal Defense and Racial Justice and General Practice clinics. We are particularly interested in candidates willing to design and lead a clinic tailored to our 10-credit evening program clinic (for 4L evening students). Our clinic director positions are tenure-track faculty positions.

Candidates must have a J.D. degree and must demonstrate high scholarly distinction or promise and a commitment to teaching excellence.

UDC LAW is the District’s only public law school and is one of only six American Bar Association approved law schools at a Historically Black College or University. UDC LAW has a statutory mission to recruit and enroll students from groups traditionally underrepresented at the bar; to provide a well-rounded theoretical and practical legal education that will enable students to be effective and ethical advocates; and to represent the legal needs of low-income residents through the school’s legal clinics.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Teach assigned School of Law courses in the JD or LLM programs.

Maintain proficiency on the use of software and technology in the classroom.

Research, write, and publish scholarly output in academic or professional journals, books, media outlets and/or electronic media in a manner that is consistent with the direction of the academic program.

Keep abreast of developments in the relevant instructional area by reading current literature, collaborating with colleagues, participating in professional conferences to enhance academic performance.

Evaluate and grade students’ class work, assignments, papers, and exams using rubrics and other student-centered approaches.

Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records.

Advise and mentor students on academic and career issues.

Maintain regularly scheduled office hours to advise and assist students.

Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and scholarship issues.

Participate in writing grant proposals, as appropriate, to procure external research funding.

Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, program matters, and academic issues.

Participate in student recruitment and placement activities.

Minimum Job Requirements

An initial appointment to the rank of Associate Professor of Law shall be without tenure and for a period of not more than three years.

The faculty acknowledges that the Dean may recognize and allow the substitution of appropriate professional experience and achievement if the candidate has less teaching experience than that required above, provided that the candidate demonstrates potential for effective teaching.

A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and

At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.

A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following

qualifications:

An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;

A record of scholarship and professional growth; and

At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory backgroundinvestigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
