Job Description
** General Summary **
This role shadows an assigned, licensed provider prior to obtaining their license. This role is not be responsible for direct patient care prior to obtaining a Maryland licensure. This position precedes the licensed respiratory therapist position. This is a temporary position to be used for a limited period (approximately 2 months) from the date of employment.

Reporting Relationships
Reports to Director of Respiratory Care and Pulmonary or designee
** Working Conditions **
May be exposed to frequent interruptions and multiple crisis situations. May be physically or verbally abused by patients. Expected to work on rotating shifts including weekends and holidays as necessary. Potential for regular exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, requiring the observance of Standard (Universal) Precautions and safe handling practices. This position has been classified as high exposure risk and requires the completion of an annual respirator mask fitting.
** Physical Requirements ** (per eight hour shift)
Standing, sitting, ascending/descending stairs and walking is required 0 - 8 hours per shift. Involved heavy lifting, carrying, pushing (on rollers up to 200 lbs.) and pulling (up to and in excess of 100 lbs.) 0 - 3 hours per shift in accordance with Safe Patient Lifting policy. Manual dexterity for operating equipment which includes reaching for, fingering, grasping and handling equipment/supplies 0 - 5 hours per shift. Requires hearing/listening to differentiate sounds 0 - 5 hours per shift. Visual acuity is necessary to read labels, charts, and documents and use various instruments 0 - 8 hours per shift.
** DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES **
Reviews and collects and evaluates the data/response and determines the appropriateness of prescribed care based on patient’s age specific needs.
Aids in the development of a goal directed plan of care for designated population (infant to adult-geriatric) and provides timely and effective communication of information on the progress and care of the patient to other members of the health care team.
Selects, assembles, checks, troubleshoots and cleans (if applicable) all equipment used in providing respiratory care.
Observes their assigned licensed RCP initiates and conducts therapeutic procedures to achieve desired patient outcomes.
Maintains confidentiality of patient, employee, and hospital information.
Observes their assigned licensed RCP that assists the physician in performing special procedures in different clinical settings.
Participates in self-validation, improvement and communication to further profession and professional image.

** Qualifications **
Graduation from an AMA approved program by the National Board of Respiratory Care in Respiratory Therapy is required by hospital orientation date. Must have application submitted to take the NBRC TMC exam by the date of hire.
Current BLS CPR certification required.
