Education Director: Discovery Science Place/University of Texas at Tyler

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Education Director’s responsibilities include the creation, management, and delivery of educational content and programming at the DSP. This includes overseeing the educational component of museum exhibits, field-trip programming, camp programming and related. The Education Director supervises Site Coordinator, part-time camp instructors and assistants, university students, and consultants hired for the program. S/he will develop and oversee implementation of Discovery Science Place camps, mobile STEM lab, and mobile planetarium outreach program, including curriculum and impact assessments, and will be a key liaison between the Discovery Science Place/University of Texas at Tyler and community partners, parents, students, school districts and regional service centers. S/he will also work closely with the Executive Director of the Discovery Science Place and the Discovery Science Place board to develop educational activities integrated with the organization’s public activities in the museum and external outreach and other DSP duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

SERVICE DELIVERY and SUPERVISION:

Oversee the development and execution of informal educational programming and curriculum content consistent with the Discovery Science Place mission and program goals.

Ensure the development of appropriate curriculum plans. Foster the educational experience via hands-on developmentally appropriate and highly interactive methods, which are also consistent with Texas academic standards.

Hire and supervise camp coordinators and assistants, teachers, and consultants for the organization’s camp programs and outreach at external sites. Provide performance evaluation and feedback for all activity and group leader positions within the program.

Orient and train staff to programs, highlighting process and learning opportunities.

Coordinate professional development and curriculum support workshops opportunities for teachers and staff on best practices in informal education and out-of-school time programming.

Be available to facilitate activities with youth participants while building relationships.

Coordinate the delivery and setup mobile units at external sites when Site Coordinator is unavailable.

Assist with grant writing and budgeting for education programs

OUTREACH, COMMUNITY AND SCHOOL RELATIONSHIP DEVELOPMENT

With Executive Director and museum staff, conduct ongoing outreach at school(s) and in community, including presentations, guest workshops, and participating at relevant events.

Establish and maintain communication with members of the school staff about student needs and aspects of the school programming and onsite visits. Work closely with school staff and administrators.

Facilitate partnerships with appropriate public and private agencies that provide services to students and families to broaden the impact and reach of Discovery Science Place services and help position Discovery Science Place as a community resource. Participate on local and state committees or meetings related to school programs and student outreach, as necessary.

Pursue selected UT-Tyler campus initiatives related to educational programs and events and serve as a liaison for developing the Museum as a resource for scholarship and education.

REPORTING, ADMINISTRATION, EVALUATION

Establish a system for evaluating programs and content to measure satisfaction and effectiveness.

Establish performance standards for all personnel to assure that service objectives are attained.

Ensure performance targets are met.

Develop and maintain records needed for program administration and budgetary controls.

REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s Degree in Museum Studies, Education, Biology, Chemistry, or Engineering with five years of experience in educational programming or a Master’s Degree in one of the above fields with two years of museum education or educational programming experience. Knowledge of best practices and ethical standards in the field of museum education. Proven ability to manage different kinds of projects and programs with rapid deadlines, activities, and unexpected assignments. Proven ability to work effectively with volunteers, general public, diverse local communities, children, and fellow staff members.

PREFERRED

STEM teaching experience.

Proficiency with digital technology, new and emerging media, and social media.

Current ability to drive large truck/trailer.
