What You'll get to Do

The Senior Principal Material Process Engineer position is for a dynamic role within Northrop Grumman's Marine Systems Materials Engineering and Test Laboratory (METL) department. This is a fast-paced environment where the team provides materials engineering support to design engineering and on-site production activities. This team supports all programs within Marine Systems, including post-reactor propulsion and power generation assemblies for nuclear-powered Navy vessels and launcher structures.

An ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate subject matter expertise in materials and/or weld engineering and will have a strong background in metallurgical and weld processes for ferrous materials. This position requires a holistic and practical understanding of metallurgy, forming processes, metallographic evaluation, heat treatments, corrosion control, and how to conduct failure analysis investigations. Knowledge of common commercial weld codes are expected and knowledge of NavSea weld codes are a plus. Familiarity with DoD programs and lifecycle management are also beneficial.

Experience with additive manufacturing of large-scale components, e.g. EBAM, WAAM and other DED modalities is required. An ideal candidate will have practical experience with designing for additive, transition from design to production, inspection/NDT, and the qualification of additive components.

Regular activities in this role may include providing materials engineering expertise during design, ownership of materials engineering related tasks for specific programs, conducting and/or supporting internal/contract research & development efforts, technical support during procurement activities, and technical support during supplier qualifications.

Working physically from the Sunnyvale, CA location three days a week is preferred; however, working remotely from a domestic location will be considered for well-qualified candidates after a provisional period. This position will require approximately 10 percent travel from Sunnyvale during a typical year. We will provide a flexible work schedule including 5/40, 980, or 4/10 work weeks.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in STEM with 9 years of experience; OR a Master's Degree in STEM with 7 years of experience; OR a PhD in STEM with 4 years of experience.

Extensive weld engineering or materials engineering/science background.

Familiarity into Navy / DoD processes and workflow.

Background in metallurgical practices, (e.g, weld, metallurgy, metallographic evaluation, heat treatments, fracture mechanics, corrosion control, and failure analysis).

Practical understanding of additive manufacturing modalities and alloys.

US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a secret-level clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

An active DOD clearance, secret-level or above.

Direct experience designing, manufacturing, inspecting, and transitioning large-scale additive manufacturing parts into mass production.

Practical experience with NavSea weld codes

Salary Range: $120,900 - $181,300

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
