Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe’s growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms. Today, our foundry is developing over 40 different organisms to make different products across multiple industries.

To realize our dream of building a next-generation organism company, each of our organisms needs to be successfully deployed. Translating our lab-scale fermentation processes to pilot - and then commercial - scale is a key step in providing products to our customers and the overall market. We’re seeking an Upstream Process Engineer to scale up our fermentations internally, and then help drive tech transfer to commercial scale. With your passion for fermentation and excellent critical thinking skills, your role will be critical to interfacing with and incorporating information from multiple disciplines, both from Ginkgo and externally.

Responsibilities Execute internal tech transfer and scale-up of fermentations from ambr250 scale to 5L, 10L, and 30L reactors

Collaborate and coordinate with Ginkgo’s Fermentation, Downstream Process Engineering, Project Engineering, QA/QC, Program, and Alliance Management teams to successfully deliver products to customers

Provide guidance during outgoing fermentation tech transfer and scale-up

Contribute to maintaining Ginkgo’s autoclavable and SIP fermentation systems, informing facility expansion as needed

Interface with customer and contract manufacturing sites, which may include some travel

Desired Experience and Capabilities BS in microbiology, biology, chemical engineering, or related field

At least 2-5 years of industrial experience

Hands-on experience with both autoclavable and SIP reactors

Experience with fermentation control software (e.g. MFCS, BioCommand)

Expertise with executing both incoming and outgoing tech transfers, a plus

Experience in scaling a variety of fermentation processes, a plus

Ability to work well within a team in a fast-paced environment, and balance multiple projects simultaneously

Excellent communication, problem solving, and data analysis skills
