Established in 1939, Carlthorp School is the oldest independent coeducational day school for grades K-6 located in Santa Monica, California. Carlthorp School provides a strong academic foundation in a diverse and nurturing school community that emphasizes respectful values, responsible work habits, and excellence in order to prepare our students to achieve their highest potential in education and life. In addition to supporting students, we are dedicated to supporting faculty growth and development through ongoing professional development and training. We have 280 students with two lead teachers per classroom of 20 students and two classes per grade level.

Job Overview

The Director of Technology will provide strategic leadership in the development and implementation of the school-wide technology program. This person will implement technology solutions that support and improve the school's existing processes. The Director of Technology will provide leadership to ensure the school meets both the educational needs of the faculty and students, as well as the operational needs of the School.

The Director of Technology is a 12-month full-time administrative position serving all community members (K-6). Daily tasks involve providing technology support through consultative advice, training, inventory, and upkeep of all the school's technology materials and software acquisitions, and oversight and administration of the one-to-one iPad/Macbook program. The Director of technology provides vision and management of our school network, hardware, and software.

We are seeking a collaborative, highly organized individual with a growth mindset and a passion for Educational Technology who aims to make a difference and prepare our students for their future.

Roles and Responsibilities

Oversee instructional technology hardware, software, and related web-based or other tools, information technology, systems management, as well as network development and management.

Oversee and manage the school learning management system Blackbaud. Assist with updating the LMS, troubleshooting, and maximizing features that meet our school’s needs.

Provide leadership, vision, and day-to-day management of the technology department, including data network and backup systems, firewall and security issues, databases, servers, printers, telephone systems, overhead paging, and other related areas.

Oversee, manage, and update school hardware. Support school and teachers with daily usage of iPads (Grades K-2), Mac Air books (Grades 3-6), Promethean Boards, Classroom cameras, document readers, VR headsets, projectors, Apple TV devices, school copiers, printers, and audio/visual equipment.

Oversee and manage current school software, IXL, iReady Math, Google Classroom, Google Suite, See Saw, Type to Learn, etc. Installing necessary programs/apps, tracking student accounts and logins, and training faculty and students.

Maintain technology standards, procedures, and acceptable use policies for faculty, students, and staff.

Provide necessary professional development and growth experiences for faculty in areas of instructional technology integration and design.

Manage technical budgets, allocate resources and research, plan and supervise technology-related projects.

Maintain the school’s technology and a backup plan.

Oversight of outside Technology audit services and assessments.

Serve as a liaison for vendor contracts and relationships. Negotiate and manage bids, agreements, and contracts for technology and technology services as needed by the school.

Professional Expectations

Provide a welcoming and helpful face of technology to the students, faculty, staff and community members.

Member of the Leadership team and work closely with Administration.

Research current trends, products, programs, applications, and equipment and maintain knowledge and understanding of trends and best practices in an elementary school setting.

Support our teachers in their classrooms and establish an authentic campus presence and partnership as one of them, understanding the diverse needs of our teaching staff and the role that technology, innovation, and pedagogy play in the classroom.

Support school events with technology as needed. Events can include after-school performances, Saturday Assessment Days, guest speakers, etc.

Strong organizational and management skills.

Sincere love of teaching and making a difference.

Kind, empathetic, and hardworking with a “yes” mindset.

Qualifications

Degree in educational technology, computer science, or related field, or equivalent experience (preferably master’s degree).

3-5 years experience working in informational or instructional technology operations. Experience in a school environment is preferred. Classroom teaching experience in a K-6 setting is a plus.

Strong communication skills — written, verbal, presentational, and instructional — to effectively communicate technical information to all stakeholders.

Experienced in leading trainings, workshops, and professional development.

Experience in the management of IT-related projects with an emphasis on management skills and a solid ability to prioritize.

Strong knowledge of IT infrastructure and operations best practices.

The yearly salary for this position ranges from $90,000 to $160,000 and takes into consideration a range of experience, education, credentials, and skill level.
