Temple University Klein College of Media and Communication

Two tenured/tenure-track positions in the Department of Journalism

The Department of Journalism in the Klein College of Media and Communication at Temple University invites applications for two faculty positions in journalism: a tenure-track assistant professor and a tenure-eligible open-rank professor. Both positions begin July 1, 2024.

Candidates with a Ph.D. are preferred, but we may consider candidates who are ABD at the time of application or candidates with a significant body of exceptional creative/professional work.

We welcome applicants who employ a range of research methods to explore issues in journalism and media studies.

We particularly encourage applicants whose research can deepen departmental strengths in areas such as:

Community-centered, solutions-oriented, and participatory journalism and civic media

Media justice

Research that centers on the needs and assets of marginalized communities or identity groups in the U.S. or internationally

We seek colleagues who can teach across our curriculum and have a strength in at least one of the following teaching needs in our department: the business of journalism, media economy/policy, political economy, equity and representation in sports media, science and environmental journalism, global journalism, narrative and long-form writing, multimedia journalism, and data, design, and product development. Successful candidates will have a track record or the potential for impactful scholarship, dynamic and inclusive teaching, and a history of or openness to collaboration on scholarly and applied initiatives.

We seek colleagues who can contribute to teaching, mentoring, and programmatic development at the undergraduate, MJ, and Ph.D. levels. Our department has about 300 undergraduate majors and offers an undergraduate major and minor. The Department of Journalism is home to a Master of Journalism program, and faculty members may contribute to Klein’s other graduate programs, including a Communication for Development and Social Change master’s program and an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Media and Communication. In addition, faculty members may collaborate with Klein-based initiatives such as the Logan Center for Investigative Reporting, the Claire Smith Center for Sports Media, and a forthcoming initiative focused on community-centered and participatory media. Faculty in the Department of Journalism share a commitment to collegiality and caring—for each other, for our students, and for the communities we belong to. We embody diversity and practice inclusivity.

Our creative work and research inform our practice and lead us to pursue solutions. We seek colleagues who are willing to collaborate within and without our department and who want to join us in building better journalism education. The college enrolls nearly 2,000 undergraduate students and more than 100 graduate students. Temple University’s community at large includes over 30,000 students in the region and at several international campuses.
