As the Engineering Lead at Boulevard, you will be responsible for leading your squad in the evolution and execution of your squad’s charter in partnership with Product and Design. Your commitment to the customer experience and strong ownership of the quality and integrity of your squad’s work sets a high standard for the squad. Working closely with the Product Manager, Designer, and Product Marketing Manager, you will be crucial in making informed product decisions, building exceptional products, and achieving significant business outcomes. Your dedication to developing scalable, performant, and maintainable systems goes hand in hand with creating a motivating environment for everyone to excel in their work.
What you’ll do here:
Lead the squad, focusing on strategic planning and execution, ensuring alignment with the company’s vision and objectives.
Drive the adoption of software engineering best practices, promoting a culture of excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement using technologies like Elixir, Phoenix, React, Typescript, Postgres, and more.
Own and lead the technical implementation and architecture of scalable, performant, maintainable squad initiatives that meet evolving business needs.
Champion the maintenance of an observable, secure, and efficient codebase, addressing technical debt proactively to ensure the platform’s reliability and performance
Foster a collaborative and inclusive squad environment for your reports, setting clear expectations and providing regular feedback to support individual growth and squad excellence.
Lead and mentor engineers in career development, encouraging skill enhancement and ownership opportunities.
Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for software quality and squad productivity, implementing strategies to meet or exceed targets.
Actively engage with product, design, marketing, and executive stakeholders throughout the product delivery lifecycle, ensuring clear communication and alignment on project goals, timelines, and deliverables.
Translate complex technical concepts into understandable language for non-technical stakeholders, fostering a collaborative environment for decision-making.
Participate in Incident Commander on-call rotation, where you will lead incident response by guiding the response towards resolution, communicating to stakeholders, and identifying post-incident improvements.
What you’ll need to thrive:
Experience : 5+ years of experience building well architected systems at scale; 2+ years owning and delivering complex, impactful initiatives. While significant experience in direct people leadership is not a prerequisite, a strong inclination towards learning and developing leadership skills to manage direct reports effectively is essential.
CS Foundations : Ability to make sound decisions and tradeoffs in design and implementation, appropriately anticipating scale, maintenance, and overall operational feasibility of solutions.
Strong Communicator : strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. You know your audience and can communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.
Collaborative : Deep partnership with your product, design, and marketing, constantly collaborating to ensure we progress towards the desired outcomes, maintaining healthy engagement with peers and stakeholders across R&D for cross-functional initiatives.
Ownership : Able to lead large initiatives and roadmaps by partnering with Product, Design, and other stakeholders to define and scope smaller deliverables that yield incremental value to the business and customers.
Autonomy : Ability to move things forward in the face of ambiguity, operating effectively in decision-making while clearly articulating risks, trade-offs, and ensuring proper visibility to key stakeholders and the squad.
Technical & Leadership Skills : You have a balance of both technical and leadership strengths. You guide sound technical decisions within the squad, as well as empower your direct reports to autonomously create significant impact.
Forward Thinker : Demonstrated ability to set strategy for evolving systems to best support long-term objectives while still delivering incremental value in the now.
How We’ll Take Care Of You:
Your total budgeted cash compensation for this role is between $172,200 and $246,000 USD, depending on your current skills, experience, training, and overall market demands. This range is subject to change, and there is always room for growth and advancement.
