Deputy Project Manager

Under the general direction of the Principal Transportation Engineer, the Supervising Transportation Engineer serves as the Deputy Project Manager in the California High Speed Rail Authority's (Authority) Engineering Services Branch (ESB).

The ESB is responsible for the successful delivery of the engineering elements of the high-speed rail program throughout the entire project lifecycle. The ESB is a team of experts dedicated to supporting the Authority's infrastructure and rail delivery projects. ESB provides comprehensive project support, ensuring consistency in design, engineering, cost estimation, seismic compliance, and construction of high-speed rail infrastructure, buildings, stations, and all related structures. The ESB also provides engineering support to other program functions and executive groups.

Working Conditions

Telework is available for this position with a minimum of two in-person working days per week.

*Due to physical requirements of the job, this position is subject to medical evaluation and clearance.

While working on site, the incumbent works in a professional office environment, in a climate-controlled cubicle which may fluctuate in temperature and is under artificial light. Incumbent will be required to use a computer, mouse, and video display terminal and will be required to sit for long periods of time at a computer screen. Employee must be able to focus for long periods of time, multi-task, adapt to changes in priorities and complete tasks or projects with short notice. Employees may be required to travel outside of their workstation to perform general tasks.

Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate: Knowledge of and ability to apply engineering judgment in areas of design, civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, and tunneling on transportation civil infrastructure projects.

Experience in areas of structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, and or tunneling on civil infrastructure projects.

Knowledge or familiarity with the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance of Way Association requirements pertaining to high-speed rail systems.

Experience with standard design criteria manuals utilized in civil infrastructure projects including standard specifications and/or directive drawings.

Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to achieve positive results.

Demonstrated project management skills to direct an experienced professional staff.

Experience managing and administering engineering contracts.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with all levels of Authority management and employees, external groups, and local governments.

Experience managing, directing, assigning, checking work, and giving instructions to engineers and others.

Experience in areas of project management, project development and or design, and construction on transportation civil infrastructure projects.

Ability to exercise a high degree of initiative, flexibility, and judgment.
