Occupational Safety Specialist

Position Overview: This person will be responsible for implementing, training, monitoring and maintaining corporate safety policies that will ensure an efficient and safe working environment for all employees at our Chicago operations. This person will coordinate with the Corporate Safety Manager to ensure safety processes and improvements align with current corporate health and safety policies.

Essential Job Functions:

Develop, communicate and implement company safety rules, policies and procedures in compliance with federal, state, and local guidelines through coordination with Corporate Safety Manager. Issue and maintain all required OSHA & BWC reports for Chicago Operations.

Collaborate with Operations leadership to monitor compliance and identify safety issues. Intervene in case of unsafe activities or operations within the workplace; advise on provisions and recommended actions to minimize safety risks.

Evaluate, monitor, and manage facility safety-related incidents. Direct safety-related incident inquiry and investigation procedures and propose corrective actions. Maintain documentation record and report safety-related incident statistics.

Facilitate Safety Committee; conduct monthly meetings to review safety-related incidents. Conduct regular safety-walks through workplace to identify situations that are unsafe and/or hazardous in nature and issue recommend corrective measures required to reduce incident risks.

Organize and conduct required training plans and procedures for facility employees. Monitor safety measures to determine need for further training on safety.

Conduct new employee safety orientation (maintain contact with new employees during first weeks of employment).

Monitor and facilitate training of proper usage of tools and equipment, i.e. tow motors and lifts, cranes, first aid/CPR etc. Document and maintain all related training records and licenses.

Monitor and facilitate inspections of all apparatus, i.e. ladders, straps, chains, fall protection, etc. Document and maintain all related inspection records.

Oversee company environmental policies including required EPA record keeping and reporting. Evaluate, monitor, and manage environmental permit requirements.

Research and stay current with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements (OSHA, NFPA, EPA, etc.) and best practices to minimize risks in these areas to the organization.

Oversee annual audits of facility and operations for third party vendors and customers.

Non-Essential Job Functions:

Other duties as assigned.

Training: Provided on the job and supplemented with external seminars/classes.

Qualifications:

Education & Certifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field required, or equivalent combination of education and experience; OSHA 30 hour, BCSP accredited certification (ASP, CSP, etc.), COSS or other relevant certification is a plus.

Experience: 2+ years’ experience as a safety professional in a manufacturing environment; Knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations; Proficiency in MS Office programs and online research; Ability to work with all levels of employees; Bi-lingual/Multi-lingual is a plus.

Working Conditions: Temperature-regulated office and manufacturing environment.
