Arlington County is an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. We are seeking highly motivated individuals for exciting one-year Internships in a variety of positions across the County. These positions offer a career opportunity to qualified individuals with little or no previous professional work experience to help them prepare for a career in a variety of fields of work. This Internship will provide recent college graduates and currently enrolled graduate students with in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting local government initiatives while participating in a developmental and training cohort with peers.

Internship

Over the course of a year, Interns work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They support the County's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public-sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

We anticipate filling this position between May 1, 2024 to July 24, 2024 depending on the needs of the assigned department.

Interns must be ready to begin employment by September 2, 2024, but some may begin earlier.

This is not a fully remote opportunity, in-office hours are to be expected.

Interns are also expected to participate in both in-office work assignments as well as a member of the in-person training cohort.

Police Department

To provide IT support services across all Public Safety agencies including Sheriff's Office, Police Department, Fire Department and PS Emergency Communications (911). Serving the specialized technology needs to these various Public Safety agencies, to correlate these technologies to a law enforcement environment and to liaise with personnel in the Department of Technology Services and the Public Safety subject matter experts. To establish, maintain and administer agency specific technology needs across the Public Safety community.

Within PSIT, the Infrastructure Support team is responsible for providing support and expertise required to maintain the Public Safety network, system hardware, all workstation and mobile devices, servers and peripheral equipment. In addition, the infrastructure team performs business analysis, manages system lifecycles, designs and monitors system upgrade and back-up strategies, analyzes systems to assure seamless integration, install test, deploy, and retire IT components as is required to meet agency operational objectives.

Under the direct supervision of a mentor, responsibilities include: Providing responsive, high-quality end-user information systems support (on-site and phone-based);

Receiving and resolving user problems requiring analysis and the application of multiple technical skills in telecommunications, network, or other associated areas;

As needed, providing on-site technical support for special events coordinated by the Public Safety Agencies;

Installing, configuring and testing Public Safety devices with supporting hardware, operating system, software, and network components;

Coordinating with the Public Safety IT and County technical staff to ensure correct device and network configurations are in place;

Configuring and troubleshooting desktop applications to ensure optimal performance for users;

Performing software installations and upgrades including testing to ensure proper performance and compatibility with other Public Safety applications;

Configuring and troubleshooting hardware such as mobile devices, desktops, servers, storage devices, display devices, and document management stations;

Preparing standardized documentation on installation, maintenance, and recovery procedures for operating systems, as well as, reported incidents and resolutions according to guidelines and procedures; and

Maintaining the Public Safety IT inventory.

Selection Criteria

Minimum:

Recent, 2023 and/or 2024 college graduates earning either a Bachelor's or a Master's degree* in the area of consideration prior to the start date of the internship must have: No significant professional-level work experience (less than one year) in the internship field; and

Applicants who are currently enrolled in a Master's degree program related to the internship must not have significant professional-level work experience in the internship area and must be available to work during designated hours.

*Any time lapse between earning degrees may not include significant professional-level work experience.

Degree Requirements: Systems Architecture, Computer Science, Networking, Cybersecurity, Cloud Architecture, Information Systems Technology, Information Technology Management, Business Administration with an IT focus, or related discipline. Applications will be accepted from candidates graduating with an undergraduate degree no later than August, 2024 and from candidates currently pursuing a Master's Degree in their field as described above.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following: G.P.A. of 3.0 or above is preferred and applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts.

Special Requirements

Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It will include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, polygraph examination and credit history. The pay ranges listed above are effective June 30, 2024.

Work Hours: This is a full-time position (40 hrs/week), typically M-F between 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PSIT provides 24x7x365 support for first responders, as such, staff may be asked to work nights or weekends in an emergency or to support special events. Flex hours are provided. A reliable means of transportation to and from the office is highly encouraged. This is not a fully remote opportunity.

Employees will be expected to be in the office at the discretion of the Supervisor and needs of the agency as well as to attend in-person classroom training.

Permanent, Full-Time Appointments

All jobs are permanent, full-time appointments unless otherwise stated in the announcement. The following benefits are available:

Paid Leave: Vacation leave is earned at the rate of five hours biweekly. Leave accrual increases gradually until eight hours of leave are earned biweekly for twelve or more years of service. Sick leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. Paid parental and family leave benefits are also offered. Leave is pro-rated for part-time employees.

Holidays: There are eleven paid fixed holidays each year, as well as two floating holidays. Initial allotment of floating holidays may vary based on when you are hired.

Health and Dental Insurance: Four group health insurance plans are offered - a health maintenance organization, two plans with in-network only coverage, and a high-deductible plan with in and out-of-network coveerage, along with a Health Savings Account (HSA). Group dental insurance is also offered, with two options for coverage. The County pays a significant portion of the premium for these plans for employees and their dependents. The County also contributes to the HSA.

Life Insurance: Basic life insurance is provided at no cost to employees. The benefit is one times annual salary. Additional life insurance may be purchased for yourself, spouse, and/or children.

Retirement: The County retirement program is made up of three parts: a defined benefit (pension) plan, a defined contribution plan (401(a)), and a deferred compensation plan (457). The defined benefit plan provides a monthly retirement benefit based on your final average salary and years of service with the County. You contribute a portion of your salary on a pre-tax basis to this plan. General employees contribute 4% of pay; uniformed public safety employees contribute 7.5% of pay. The County also contributes to this plan. Employees become vested in the plan at five years of service.

For general employees, the County also contributes 4.2% of pay to a defined contribution plan (401(a)). The 457 deferred compensation plan allows you to save for retirement on either a pre-tax (457b) or post-tax (457 Roth) basis up to the IRS annual limit. New employees are automatically enrolled with a pre-tax contribution equal to 2% of your pay. A variety of investment options are available for the 401(a) and 457 plans.

Other Benefits: The County also offers health care, dependent care, and parking flexible spending accounts; adoption assistance, tuition reimbursement; transit and walk/bike to work subsidies; a college savings plan; wellness programs; training opportunities; and a variety of other benefits.

Permanent, Part-Time Appointments:

Part-time employees who work ten or more hours per week receive paid leave and benefits in proportion to the number of hours worked per week.

Limited Term Appointments:

Benefits are the same as permanent appointments except that the employees do not achieve permanent status.

Temporary Regular Appointments:

Temporary regular employees who work 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health, dental, and basic life insurance as described above. They are also eligible for vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays.

Temporary Seasonal and Occasional Appointments:

Temporary employees who work on a seasonal basis or variable hours receive sick leave, but do not normally receive other paid leave or benefits. Exceptions are noted in individual announcements.
