Position Overview

The Executive Director (“ED”) is the chief executive officer of the Maltz Museum (“Museum”) and is appointed by the Board of Directors of the Maltz Museum (“Board”). The ED works closely with the Board, staff, volunteers and other groups to support, promote and provide leadership with regard to the mission, purposes, values and goals of the Museum. The ED is the overall leader and facilitator of the Museum community and bears ultimate responsibility for the integration of the Museum values. The ED has ultimate responsibility for the personnel, budget, permanent and special exhibitions, education and development programs, legal and fiscal affairs, and facilities. The ED ensures the Museum has strong outreach, engaging with local and regional communities including individuals, education, civic, business and cultural organizations and government agencies, as well as the local, regional, and national Jewish communities. The ED reports to the Board and serves as an ex officio non-voting member of the Board.

Supervises: Director of Finance, Director of Operations, Director of Development, Marketing Manager, Senior Manager of Education and Outreach, Manager of Collections and Exhibits, and Executive Administrative Assistant

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Jewish Values:

Ensures that the Jewish values of the Museum are developed and promoted among the staff and volunteers.

Articulates the mission to staff, volunteers and the wider community.

Monitors the expression of Jewish values in all facets of the Museum in consultation with the Board and the management team.

Monitors the selection of personnel so that the values of those employed reflect the mission of the Museum.

Overall Policy

Presents policy issues and recommendations to the Board.

Provides for a periodic review of the philosophy and mission statements.

Determines the administrative structure of the Museum.

Leads, coaches, develops and inspires management team and staff.

Meets regularly with the management team and other key administrative personnel.

Establishes criteria for applicants and oversees hiring initiatives for competence and cultural fit.

Provides at least an annual evaluation for all direct reports based on the written position descriptions and established goals.

Approves employment or dismissal of members of the staff who are under the supervision of the direct reports.

Ensures compliance with all relevant regulations, policies, and procedures related to museum management

Represents the Museum through active membership in local, regional, national, and global organizations

Accepts additional responsibilities as directed by the Board.

Institutional Advancement:

Serves as the chief spokesperson for the Museum.

Communicates with various publics through all appropriate media through properly prepared material

and literature.

Provides effective liaison between the Museum and the Board, community groups and the public. Collaborates with the Director of Development to identify and engage donors to continue building support for the museum, including individuals, foundations, government agencies and corporations. Meets with individuals, foundations, government agencies and corporations to seek funds.

Approves all programs, activities and campaigns of the Advancement Department, including fundraising, advertising and public relations.

Leads public relations activities including website, social media and the physical presence of the Museum with the goal of creating a stronger brand.

Ensures the development and implementation of a marketing plan for the Museum.

Develops and increases membership base.

Actively engages and energizes volunteers, Board, committees, partner organizations, Museum members and donors.

Develops and maintains partnerships with external organizations

Programming and Planning:

Oversees special exhibits selection, development and installation in conjunction with Special Exhibitions Committee.

Develops, in cooperation with the Board, short and long-term goals and objectives for appropriate areas of the Museum: collections and exhibits, staffing, facilities, finances and institutional advancement.

Communicates short and long-term goals and objectives, as well as the mission statement, to the Museum community and most particularly to the wider community.

Finance:

Submits an annual budget to the Finance Committee and then to the Board for approval. Supervises and controls the fiscal operations of the Museum.

Reviews monthly financial statements compared to budget.

Develops policy and procedures regarding non-museum use of the Museum’s facilities.

With other members of the Board, the ED is the legal corporate representative of the Museum. Maintains liaison with legal counsel.

Board of Directors:

Works with the Board Governance Committee to present nominations for new Board members and to ensure appropriate orientation and continuing in-service for all Board members.

Develops, maintains and supports a strong Board

Assists the Board in ensuring the mission of the Museum.

Acts as administrative officer of the Board and serves as an ex officio non-voting member.

Prepares annual report for the Board

Ensures the implementation of all Board policies.

Directs the on-going Strategic Planning process; recommends timeline and resources needed.

Seeks and builds Board involvement with strategic direction

Reviews all Board committees on a regular basis to determine objectives and goals while ensuring optimal Board committee participation.

Serves as ex officio member of appropriate Board committees, including the Executive Committee.

Requirements:

Advanced degree, preferably an MBA; or equivalent experience.

Minimum of ten years of experience in senior management.

Strong fundraising experience.

Past success working with a Board with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships.

Track record of effectively leading a performance- and outcomes-based organization and staff.

Ability to share specific examples of having developed and implemented strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth.

Salary range: Commensurate with education and experience.
